Mexico City and Los Reyes

The capital of Mexico also known as La Ciudad de Mexico or just La Ciudad (the City) is one of the most densely populated cities in the world.  A city built over a massive lake atop the Aztec ruins of the Templo Mayor in the city’s center, also known as the Zócalo, is just the beginning for an introduction to this country's rich history. It is a great place to start an experience in Mexico because understanding a little about the history gives context to the culture surrounding other areas.

Just outside of Mexico City is the district of Los Reyes, which takes about 30 minutes and a few metro transfers to get to. 30 years ago this would have been considered “the edge of town” but is now nearly as occupied as La Ciudad. Entire streets are blocked by street vendors selling you everything from amaranth bars and aguas frescas, and clothes and jewelry. It is down one of these streets that we find the church where Michael first met the young people he created Dialogo Sur-Norte with.

If you choose Mexico City as your destination you can expect to be greeted by Jesus Gomez Gomez who will be your guide. His partnership with SaND Travel dates back to the original Dialogo Sur-Norte group and he works to continue the mission today. His knowledge of Mexican history is extensive and his love to share it with travelers is contagious.

He has so many stories from the different paces that we visit from his own experience and from historical fact.
