Lima, Peru

Lima is the capital and major center of all that happen in Peru.  With almost a third of the total population of Peru, Lima is a world-class cultural and civic hub of food, entertainment and options for life-experiences.  Starting in Lima, one can get an overview of all that happens historically reveling in the ambience of riches past and present.

We begin in Lima as the main Peruvian airport as well as Peru’s hub of activity.  From here all excursions begin and transform the traveler, giving respite and returning you home.

From Lima there are currently options for two of three primary excursions, one for 5-8 days to Cusco, the gateway to the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu.  While a train and bus ride up the valley and mountain is well worth the time, energy and effort, it is also important to remember that this little remnant of an Incan Empire is just that, one little remnant of a vast system of culture that lives today in the people and places throughout the mountains surrounding Cusco.  We will visit with people and hear their stories of life, both from the past and present, sharing food, fun, arts, crafts and music.  Local hosts Doris and David will share their insights, connecting us with other local people for a glimpse into a hidden world, inviting us into mysteries from which we can only hope to learn and grow.

The second option is a visit to nature.  The Incan mountains of Peru hold the sources of the world’s mightiest river, the Amazon.  With the highest waterfall in the world among her origins, the Amazon jungle is a world unlike any you will experience.  Both wild and tame at the same time.  All one’s needs are at hand.  You can reconnect with a primitive soul in Her people and a simple world that is fast-vanishing.  Come with us for the briefest of images into what we could be losing without caring and concerned voices acting on behalf of people and environs that support and sustain unimaginable lives.

The third and last excursion is Lunahuana.  This is a slice of heaven in the desert, an oasis with activities to enthrall and cabanas in which to relax and reflect.  Rosi will invite us into their world of wonder and a peaceful setting along the Rio Cañete. For the more adventurous you can try white water rafting and zip-lining over the same river.

A return to Lima isn’t just a stop to collect and repackage our luggage.  Lima is itself a world-class city with renowned chefs using the cultural riches of Peru’s vast diversity.  A city with architectural wealth and a street scene that provides energy and context for experiences recently absorbed.  We will do a bit of UNPACKING as well.  Preparing you with arts and crafts shops, great food and settings, and local people’s stories of lives different from ours.  A context for returning to lives well-lived and futures enhanced by a trip into Peruvian culture.
